Thoughts on Facebook Places from a Marketers POV
Just catching up on the recent Facebook Places announcement. As a marketer my first thought is how to use this to market things… I’m sorry, I know to some of you it may seem crass, but hey, that’s what I do for a living, it’s what I know, and the framework I see the world ; )
Consider this… you’ve spent the last two years to develop your network of a few hundred to several thousand FB fans and all of a sudden you can identify who is close to your location… WOW!!!! You already have a relationship with these people that they have “Liked” or become a “fan” of your page, you know they are close, all you need to do now is to present them with a timely offer that is relevant to them… seems like an easy sale to me.
For the last few years, mobile marketers (Tagga) have been spewing the value of being able to reach people on the fly with short text based messages, social sites have been touting the value of having a network of followers you can know a lot about, and geo sites (Foursquare) have been trying to sort out their location based piece… despite the fact they all had / have the right idea, unfortunately, none of them have enjoyed the ubiquity that FB has and have been missing parts of each other’s bag of tricks… in an instant this problem is solved with Facebook Places… large networks, with real and sizeable followers, a culture of use that has increasingly become mobile, and now the geo piece that pulls it all together. I predict this one may just prove successful if FB opens it up to the biz pages in a meaningful way and builds support around it.
My apologies for being captain obvious to all the marketers out there who already get this, but hope it proves of value to those that never saw it for anything more than a new feature to connect with friends.
